Hawaiians or "Kanakas" as they were called, were employed by a number of competing companies in the fur trade starting in 1811. The artwork beckons prospective Hawaiians to set sail on John Jacob Astor's ship, The Tonquin to "E Hana a Holokai" or to Work and Sail, but the trip was not what they expected.
